I will never understand street evangelists

People like Westboro and Brother Jed and all that. People who stand on street corners telling everyone that they are a sinful whore and going to hell. As a Christian, I feel embarrassed and ashamed by these people. Never once in my life have I met someone who has come to Christ through the preachings of a street evangelist. Not only are they frightening, hateful and unprogressive, they are ignoring very crucial parts of the Bible.

  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God -Matthew 5:9
  • In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. -Matthew 5:16
  • Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. -Matthew 7:1-5
  • So stirring up anger produces strife -Proverbs 30:33c
  • Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him. -Proverbs 29:20
  • An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins. A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor. -Proverbs 29:22-23
  • A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed - without remedy. -Proverbs 29:1
  • It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way. -Proverbs 19:2
  • A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. -Proverbs 17:27
  • The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice. A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. -Proverbs 12:15-16
  • Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all wrongs. -Proverbs 10:12
  • The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. -Psalm 145:8-9
  • "…while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them." -Matthew 13:29b
  • But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pur; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. -James 3:17
  • If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. -James 1:26
  • My dear brothers, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. -James 1:19
  • Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful  Mercy triumphs over judgment! -James 2:12-13
  • Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. -Philippians 2:5
  • Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. -Ephesians 5:1-2
  • Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. -Ephesians 4:2
  • Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. -Galatians 6:1a
  • If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. -1st Corinthians 13:1-2
  • A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. -John 13:14

That’s 23 verses right there. I am not saying I am more righteous than them. I am the farthest thing from a perfect Christian. Yet if these evangelists are met with these verses and still refuse to listen, I begin to doubt their faith.
